A dialogue between the German painter Horst Antes (1936) and the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) can be seen in our Kabinett this year, in collaboration with Galleria Franco Noero.
Mapplethorpe is known for his black and white photographs of human bodies from the 1970s and 1980s. Antes, who was born a decade earlier, is primarily associated with his figurative paintings from the 1960s and 1970s. In his photographs, Mapplethorpe deals with beauty, sexuality and identity. Antes’ figures, while more abstract, still convey a sense of the human form and often evoke emotional or psychological states.
