Rapidly growing floods of images on the internet and AI make art almost inevitably a commentary on the illusion of contemporaneity.

Three painters – Jana Schröder, Peppi Bottrop, and Andreas Breunig – present drawings at the Society for Contemporary Art in Augsburg.

20:15 is both the title of the exhibition and this accompanying book. The three artists are united not only by their shared studies with Albert Oehlen at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, but also by a philosophical approach to their chosen medium. “Our painting is a response to the given conditions of imagery. We are here to deconstruct and question what images really are” (Schröder).

Art historian Christian Malycha interviews the three artists together about the concept of their exhibition and individually about the evolution of their works. The conversations in this book, along with reproductions of all the exhibited drawings, offer an insightful glimpse into the ongoing discourse on the relevance of painting.
