Sarah Schumann (1933–2019) is considered one of the most influential artists of the postwar period in the Federal Republic of Germany and is regarded as a key figure in the new Berlin women’s movement of the 1970s. At the center of her early work are the “shock collages” she created between 1954 and 1964 from magazine images, illustrated books and her own photographs. Initially often idealised as a dadaist-surrealist play, the feminist and emancipatory themes and motifs in Schumann’s work were soon recognised. This volume gathers over 140 surviving shock collages, published together in a cohesive presentation for the first time. Texts by editor Christoph Keller and historian Vojin Saša Vukadinović contextualize the works within a broader art-historical framework. The book was published in parallel with the survey exhibition of Sarah Schumann’s early work at the Meyer Riegger, Berlin in September 2025. Christoph Keller is an art publisher, book designer, exhibition curator and schnapps distiller. Vojin Saša Vukadinović is a historian, publicist and gender researcher, and was a personal friend of Sarah Schumann.
