What draws us to one another? What connects us? Where does connection emerge from? Those are the central questions raised in the current exhibition at the Kunsthalle Mainz. Friendship as a relationship emphasizes commonalities. It emphasizes kindred spirits, similarity, attraction, and affinity by connecting people through shared experience, common interests and mutual trust. For a long time, friendships were seen as an enrichment or a luxury, not as an essential part of our lives. Nowadays we are aware that friendships have a significant impact on our health and wellbeing. Grounded in these observations, the international group exhibition centers on the potential of friendship as a powerful societal movement.

The artists explore friendship as a place of solidarity, creativity, and empathy as well as vulnerability, conflict, and negotiation. Through photographs, installations, video, sound, and textile works they offer versatile perspectives on interpersonal relationships. They invite the viewers to understand friendship as an active decision for one another, i.e. a relationship that needs to be activated and shaped on a regular basis.
