Sarah Schumann (1933–2019), a native of West Berlin, is regarded as one of the defining figures in the German post-war art scene. She saw herself first and foremost as a painter; at the same time, she also left a profound mark on Germany’s cultural consciousness as a graphic designer, essayist, filmmaker, actress and curator, and, in particular, as a leading figure in the New Women’s Movement of the 1970s. The exhibition focuses on Schumann’s early work from the late 1950s, which consists of «alchemical» informal paintings and, in particular, the so-called «shock collages». These surrealist works contain references to the artist’s childhood experiences of the war; at the same time, they already foreshadow her later feminist activism.
