Gabriel Vormstein

Gabriel Vormstein focuses on the theme of transience, futility, and temporality with his distinctive and acute visual language. He opens a topic by reconsidering the traces of time or that of art movements throughout history that emerge and fade to question the established criteria in art and its materials. He mainly works with newspaper that is considered a ‘low,’ povera, and impermanent artistic material. He incorporates the process of covering the grids of information and advertisements inscribed on newspaper made of recycled paper with pencil and paint. Thus, the finalized paintings become layers of substances and a synthesis of diverse meanings.

Biography

Gabriel Vormstein (born in Konstanz in 1974) lives and works in Berlin.
His work was presented in solo shows at PKM Gallery Seoul (2021), Krome Gallery (with Stefan Kaminsky, Luxembourg, 2016), Kunstverein Dillingen (Dillingen/Saar, 2015), Kunsthalle Memmingen (2014), moniquemeloche (Chicago, 2013), CCA Andratx (Mallorca, 2011), Casey Kaplan (New York, 2010/2006/2004) and Deutsche Bundesbank (Frankfurt/Main, 2005).

Vormstein has participated in group exhibition such as at Changing Room (Berlin, 2020), National Bank of Belgium (Brussels, 2019), Musée Würth France Erstein (2017), Cruise & Callas (Berlin, 2014/2008), Locust Projects (Miami, 2013), Kulturstiftung Schloß Agathenburg (2010), ZKM (Karlsruhe, 2007), Clint Roenisch Gallery (Toronto, 2006) and Kunsthaus Baselland (Basel, 2004).

The artist was laureate of Graduiertenstipendium des Landes Baden-Württemberg in 2002 and nominated for the Sovereign European Art Prize in 2009.
